Commercial Pool and Aquatics Ozone Sanitation
Commercial pools, hotel pools, health club pools, public pools and school pools can experience the high bather load that makes disinfection a critical public health issue. In these cases, many pool managers have learned that the traditional chlorine sanitation routine is simply unable to cope with the most dangerous contaminants. In addition, chlorine interacts with other elements in the water to create unhealthy byproducts like chloramines. Chlorine alone cannot do the job.
In these circumstances, both public health and management prudence indicate operators should choose the safe, effective corona discharge ozone sanitation solution. DEL’s CD ozone systems can be installed in most pools with a surprisingly small footprint to provide a low-cost sanitation program.

Public Health Responsibility
Pools that are open to the public in some fashion are susceptible to carrying waterborne diseases and disorders, also known as Recreational Water Illness (RWI). RWI can include microorganisms like e.coli, giardia, and cryptosporidium, and it also encompasses disorders like swimmer’s asthma which is caused by inhaling chloramines that are a byproduct of chlorine sanitation.
RWIs pose threats to both the swimmers and to the pool management. The problem is that chlorine sanitation by itself is ineffective against all of these problems. Luckily ozone sanitation options exist and are recognized as effective and safe.
Public Health Officials Recommend CD Ozone
To address the public health issue, the Centers for Disease Control have sponsored the development of a Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC) to provide pool managers with guidelines for safe, effective sanitation. The MAHC requires a “supplemental disinfection system” to be 99.99% effective against contaminants like cryptosporidium. It has recommended ozone as an effective sanitizer.
CD Ozone vs. UV Ozone
Although UV ozone is recognized by the MAHC, the corona discharge (CD) ozonators by DEL ozone are superior to UV ozone in the ways that count. CD ozone is more reliable under more conditions (including occluded water) that provide the margin of safety and effectiveness pool operators need.
